Deforestation matters
Forests are cleared to make room for fields and pasture. That is deforestation. It can happen far from the shop shelf, where cocoa and coffee grow, cattle graze, and familiar products begin their journey.
Forests shelter wildlife, store carbon and support the people who live around them. By the time a shipment reaches an importer, it may have passed through several hands. Knowing what happened on the land behind it can be hard. Yet customers want clearer answers about where products come from, and EU rules ask covered businesses to find out.
What the EU asks.
The EU introduced the Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) to reduce the forest loss linked to products sold in the EU. It covers listed goods made from cattle, cocoa, coffee, palm oil, rubber, soy and wood.
